Tushbaby Honest Review: From a Mom Who Has Tested Over 30 Baby Carriers

Tushbaby with toddler and baby

The Tushbaby hip seat carrier is worth considering if your baby or toddler wants to be picked up constantly and your arms need a break. I especially like it for quick ups and downs and Disney lines. The most important thing to know: the hip seat by itself is not hands-free. You must keep an arm around your child; the separate hands-free attachment has its own fit and use requirements.

I kept seeing it online and was curious whether it would be useful alongside my other carriers. After using it with my kids, I have reached for it more than I expected. It is easy to put on, the storage is helpful, and I like not having to buckle my toddler into a full carrier for every short carry.

If you’re new here, I’m Emily, AKA The Stroller Mom. I review strollers, baby carriers, and other baby gear from a mom’s perspective. Every product I review is tested with my kids to uncover the details parents care about most. I have tested over 30 different baby carriers (most of which I have bought myself, including the Tushbaby), like the Tula Explore, the best Waterproof Baby Carriers, and even the Mabe and the WildBird Aerial carrier.

In this post, I’m sharing what it’s actually been like to use it, what works, what doesn’t, and who I think it’s best for.

  • It’s great for toddlers who constantly want to get up and down
  • Perfect for Disney lines!
  • Great Storage
  • The snug attachment is cozy and supportive
  • High-quality materials (depending on which one you get)

Cons:

  • I wish the Snug Attachment were included and not sold separately!

  • Too large to keep in your diaper bag
  • Pricey when you start buying accessories like the Snug attachment or waist extender.

Price

The hip seat and hands-free attachment are separate purchases. When I checked on October 3, 2026, Tushbaby listed hip carriers from $75 and the attachment from $45, with prices varying by fabric and promotion. Weight Limit & Specs

Tushbaby with baby

The hip seat is designed for children up to 36 months and 45 lbs. Newborn use means feeding support, with your baby supported in your arms. For upright carrying, follow the position-specific guidance and wait for the required head and neck control. My photos show how it fit my children at different sizes; they are not a reason to go beyond the manufacturer’s age or weight limits.

Here are the stats:

  • Fits newborns to 36 months, and up to 45 lbs
    • Add the compatible hands-free attachment for inward carrying from 12 lbs; the current listing gives a 16 lb minimum for outward facing. Follow the instructions supplied with your version, including developmental requirements.
  • Fits 23-44 inch waist (add up to 23 more inches with our Waistband Extender)
  • Waistband 47″L x 6″H. Seat 6″L x 7.5″W (at base/widest part)
  • Weighs under 1 lb
  • 4 carry positions without The Snug and 6 carry positions with it (more about this below)
  • 5 Storage pockets + a hideable bottle holder on the original, and 3 pockets on the Lite
  • Wipe down for an easy clean (most are not machine washable)
  • Snug Attachment, Pod, and Crossbody Strap sold separately
  • You get a 1 year warranty

Carrying Positions

This is from the Tushbaby Website!

The hip seat and the hands-free attachment have different carrying instructions. Here is the distinction I would keep in mind:

  • Hip seat alone: feeding support from birth; face-to-face and hip carrying when your child meets the instructions and has the required head control. Keep an arm around your child.
  • Facing out on the hip seat: Tushbaby’s position chart starts this at six months. Follow the instructions for your model.
  • With the hands-free attachment: the current listing specifies 12–45 lbs inward facing and 16–45 lbs outward facing. It must be attached to the hip seat and used according to its own instructions.

Material and Aesthetics

Olive Tushbaby

Depending on which Tushbaby Hip Carrier you get, it will be made of polyester, cotton blend, vegan leather, or velvet.

The Snug attachment is made with 60% rayon, 35% polyester, and 5% spandex.

I bought the black and gold hip carrier, which is made of polyester, and recently received the olive, which is made with vegan leather. I have found both look and feel high-end.

Tushbaby hip carrier comfort and usability

There is no perfect carrier. Wearing the Tushbaby high on my natural waist helped it feel more supportive, but I still experienced some back discomfort, especially with my toddler. It reduced the load on my arms compared with carrying her without it. If it hurts, I would readjust or take a break rather than push through pain.

I wish the Snug Attachment was included because being hands-free is one of the biggest benefits of baby wearing, and you cannot truly be hands-free without it. That said, several friends of mine say this carrier has been a game changer with their 90th percentile babies and toddlers!

Tushbaby vs. a regular baby carrier

I reach for the hip seat when my child wants to walk, then be held, then walk again. A soft structured baby carrier makes more sense for a longer hands-free walk or a nap when your child meets that carrier’s instructions. Adding the Snug gives Tushbaby a hands-free option, but it also adds cost and another piece to put on.

If you are choosing your first carrier, compare the complete Tushbaby setup with the options in my best baby carriers guide. I would not choose a hip seat expecting it to replace every kind of carrier.

Who Should Choose the Tushbaby?

This is an excellent carrier for moms who are looking for extra support on the go for a toddler or hip baby. It’s great for Velcro toddlers, Disney lines, hip babies, babies who do not like traditional carriers, or moms who want a diaper bag and carrier in one.

I have enjoyed using the Tushbaby more than I thought I would and have found it very helpful for my middle daughter, who always wants to be held during dinner time prep.

Additional Considerations and Frequently Asked Questions

What you need to know:

What is the difference between the Tushbaby vs Tushbaby Lite?

The Tushbaby Lite is a more compact version with only 3 pockets compared to 5 on the original. It also has a slimmer profile.

How should a baby sit on the Tushbaby hip seat?

Follow the positioning instructions for your child’s stage, keeping them supported on the seat and securely held with your arm. A wide seat does not make every position appropriate for every age. If your child has a hip condition or you are unsure about fit, ask your pediatrician and use Tushbaby’s fitting guidance.

When does Tushbaby go on sale?

Tushbaby has a few sales each year: Around Mother’s Day and Black Friday. Typically, my code THESTROLLERMOM gives you a deeper discount than the code on the Tushbaby site.

What size does Tushbaby fit?

The hip seat is listed for children up to 36 months and 45 lbs, with different positions for different stages. The waistband fits approximately 23–44 inches; the optional extender adds up to 23 inches. Check the label on your version, especially if buying secondhand.

Can you wash your Tushbaby?

It depends on the fabric. Tushbaby’s polyester instructions allow machine washing after removing the plastic seat insert and fastening the hook-and-loop closure, using cold water and a gentle cycle, then air drying. Polyurethane styles are wipe-clean only. Check your care label. The hands-free attachment has separate washing instructions.

Can you use Tushbaby with newborn?

Only as supported feeding assistance according to the hip seat’s instructions. This is different from an upright, hands-free newborn carrier. The separate hands-free attachment is not for newborns under 12 lbs, and you must follow all of its fit and developmental requirements.

Can you use Tushbaby while Pregnant?

The waistband sits high around your waist, which can become uncomfortable as your body changes. Ask your pregnancy care provider about carrying your child and follow the product instructions. I would not assume that a setup that felt comfortable before pregnancy will still fit well.

Is the Tushbaby good for a hot climate?

The Tushbaby is one of the best carriers for hot climates because it has no fabric wrapped around your body (unless you use The Snug Attachment). This makes it ideal for hot days, while still providing support when you need it most.

Is Tushbaby hands-free?

The hip seat alone is not hands-free. Keep an arm around your child. The compatible hands-free attachment adds support for the positions and sizes listed in its instructions, and it must be used together with the hip seat.

For the current limits and instructions, see Tushbaby’s hip-seat guidance and the hands-free attachment details. The instructions supplied with your product take priority if you own an older version.

Tushbaby review: is this hip seat carrier worth it?

At the end of the day, the best baby carriers are the ones that safely provide good support for you and your baby, and those that you enjoy using. The Tushbaby is a fantastic toddler carrier, especially for places like the Zoo or Disney. I also have many friends who have babies who want to be on their hip at all times, and it has been a game changer for them in providing extra support. I love how easy it is to put on, the extra storage and high-quality materials, and how cozy the snug attachment feels when I need extra support and hands-free.
