Guava Roam Review

EMILY’S TAKE

This is a great jogging and all-terrain stroller with a compact fold. It has a nice canopy and comfortable seat with good recline, airless tires and fantastic suspension, and I love being able to lock and unlock the front tire from the handlebar. This is an excellent option for a family looking for a versatile outdoor stroller that can still be used as an everyday stroller.

Guava Roam Pros and Cons

Pros

  • A compact fold that fits in smaller spaces than many other joggers.
  • Lock and unlock the front wheel from the handlebar. This is so nice!
  • Airless tires, so you do not have to worry about leaks, flats or inflating them.
  • Excellent rear suspension. It pushed smoothly through snow, dirt, gravel and packed sand.
  • Excellent canopy coverage and breathability.
  • Plush seat materials, a no-rethread harness and GREENGUARD Gold certification.

Cons

  • No adjustable footrest for smaller children. My eight-month-old’s feet hang a bit.
  • The buckle is annoying to undo. You have to press four buttons to release it.
  • No hand brake for slowing on hills.
  • From-birth use requires an infant car seat and adapter. There is no newborn recline or bassinet option.
  • No latch to keep it folded. I personally like how easy that makes it to open, but some parents prefer having one.

Who it’s best for

  • Families looking for a versatile outdoor stroller that can still be used as an everyday stroller.
  • Parents who want jogging performance with airless tires and excellent suspension.
  • Families who need a more compact fold than a traditional jogger.

Reasons to choose another stroller

  • If you want a hand brake for slowing on hills, the Roam does not have one.
  • If you want a newborn recline or bassinet, you will need another stroller. From-birth use with the Roam requires an infant car seat and adapter.
  • If an adjustable footrest or a latch to keep the fold closed is a must, those are missing here. I personally like opening it without a latch, but that comes down to preference.

How I tested it

My husband and I have used the Guava Roam with our children, including my eight-month-old, two-and-a-half-year-old and four-year-old. My husband tested it while jogging, and we have taken it through dirt, gravel, packed sand and snow. It did really well in the snow, too.

Value & included accessories

The Guava Roam includes the stroller and parent organizer for the handlebar. Guava also offers bundles with accessories, including the snack tray, rain and weather shield, and padded roller backpack.

It is expensive, but I love that I can take it on a trail and still fit it in my trunk without taking the wheels off. That compact fold is a big reason I recommend it for everyday use, too.

Seat comfort & child fit

I love the seat on this stroller. The straps are no-rethread, making them easy to adjust between kids or as your child grows. The materials are plush and GREENGUARD Gold certified. The buckle is annoying to undo. You have to press four buttons to release it.

The regular stroller seat is for six months and up. To use it from birth, you need a compatible infant car seat and adapter. There is no newborn recline or bassinet option. The seat holds up to 60 lbs.

Jogging stroller seats tend to sit a little reclined, even in their most upright position. The Roam is actually one of the more upright options I have tried.

Unfortunately, there is not an adjustable footrest for smaller children. My eight-month-old’s feet hang a bit in this stroller. However, there is a nice lower footrest for older children, and my two-and-a-half-year-old and four-year-old are very comfortable in it. There are also two mesh cup holders inside the seat.

Canopy and recline

I have been really happy with the canopy coverage. You can unzip it for more shade, and I like that my child can still see out through the mesh along the bottom. The big peekaboo window is one of my favorites, and the magnets keep it open so I can easily check on my child.

To recline the seat, push the button on the back and pull it down. The recline is decent, but it does not lie flat. There is also a ventilation panel on the back with a Velcro cover. To bring the seat back up, pull the straps and push up on the back of the seat.

If you want to use the Roam from birth, you will need a compatible infant car seat and the matching Guava adapter. There is no newborn recline or bassinet option.

With a car seat attached, stick to walks on smooth paths. Do not jog or take it onto bumpy trails with that setup. The regular seat starts at six months; before you start running, make sure your child is ready and follow Guava’s jogging guidance.

Push & everyday use

STEERING & TURNING

Great

Ease of turning and navigating tight spaces, compared with other single jogging strollers.

UNEVEN SURFACES

Great

How it pushes over bumps, gravel, and uneven sidewalks, compared with other single jogging strollers.

The handlebar is foam-covered and adjustable . The middle setting of the adjustable handlebar is comfortable for both me at 5’5″ and my husband at 6 feet tall. The multiple handlebar adjustments ensure comfort for a wide range of heights. The parent organizer for the handlebar fits well and is the perfect spot for your water bottle.

I love that I can lock and unlock the front wheel right from the handlebar. I do not have to bend down or touch the tire. It is such a nice feature when switching between a walk and a jog.

I also like having the folding instructions printed right under the seat. They are easy to check if you need a reminder.

Storage and brake

There are two cup holders on the sides of the seat, which are great for your child’s water cup. There’s a nice mesh storage pocket on the back of the seat and a zipper basket on the bottom that can hold 10 lbs. It is spacious, and the additional parent organizer on the handlebar adds some storage.

Guava Roam under-seat storage basket

The brake is updated from previous styles and is a toggle brake system, green for go and red for stop. I have no complaints about the footbrake. I wish there were a hand brake like other joggers, but there is a handlebar strap for safety, and my husband has no complaints when he jogs with it.

Tires and suspension

The tires are airless. Most traditional joggers have air-filled tires, but I was pleasantly surprised by how smoothly the Roam pushes. I love not having to worry about leaks, flats or inflating the tires.

The independent rear suspension is excellent. It pushed smoothly and maneuvered well through snow, mountains, dirt, gravel and packed sand.

Folding, carrying & travel

EASE OF FOLDING

Easy

The fold is really easy. Put the handlebar in its lowest setting, lock the front wheel with the lever on the handlebar, and pull the red handle under the seat.

There is no latch to hold it closed, and I actually prefer that because it makes the stroller so easy to open. Some parents would rather have a latch to keep it shut when carrying it or lifting it into the trunk.

To open it, just pick it up by the sides and it pops open.

Guava Roam folded and standing upright

The stroller weighs 28.5 pounds. The compact fold helps it fit in vehicles other jogging strollers would not.

Comparisons & alternatives

Here is how I would choose between the Roam, Urban Glide 3 and Ridge V2.

Guava Roam vs Thule Urban Glide 3 vs UPPAbaby Ridge V2

  • Guava Roam: The smallest fold of these three, and it stands on its own. This would be my pick if I wanted a jogger for everyday use but did not want it taking over my trunk.
  • Thule Urban Glide 3: My pick for avid runners. It has the smoothest push, a hand brake and an adjustable footrest. The air-filled tires are the trade-off: I have arrived for a hike with a flat, even after filling them.
  • UPPAbaby Ridge V2: A good middle ground, with never-flat tires, a hand brake and my favorite basket of the three. The covered basket is roomy and easy to get into.
  • Using it from birth: The Ridge and Urban Glide 3 offer bassinets. With the Roam, an infant car seat and adapter are your only newborn option.
